Indianapolis, Indiana, Salmonella: Greenwood Wal-mart
Pritzker | Ruohonen, a leading food poisoning lawsuit lawfirm, is monitoring the Salmonella outbreak in the Indianapolis, Indiana, area. Since late May, there have been at least 84 cases of Salmonella poisoning (salmonellosis) reported in Marion and surrounding counties in Indiana. Ten of those victims ended up in the hospital. According to the Indiana Department of Health, the source of the outbreak is the deli and bakery areas of the Wal-Mart on 1133 North Emerson in Greenwood, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis.
"We believe food handlers who didn't have any symptoms may have contaminated the deli and bakery products," said Lynae Granzow, enteric epidemiologist, Indiana State Department of Health.
Indiana health officials recommend that individuals who purchased ready-to-eat items at the deli and bakery areas of this Wal-Mart on or before August 25 should discard those items, or return them to the store for a refund. If you have eaten any of the product, you should keep it in the refrigerator until you are sure you do not have a Salmonella infection (salmonellosis). Be sure to label it "Do not eat." If you are diagnosed with a Salmonella infection, the leftovers from the Wal-Mart in Greenwood, Indiana, may be used as evidence.
State health officials say additional cases may be identified for the next few weeks, as the investigation concludes, but expect them to eventually taper off, now that the source has been identified and addressed.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, minal diarrhea, fever, and headache. These symptoms may last for 1 to 2 days or may be prolonged, depending on the health of the person infected, the ingested dose, and the strain of Salmonella.
