Massachusetts Salmonella - Frogs and Owl Pellets

Most people do not realize that amphibians, such as frogs, and reptiles can infect people with Salmonella bacteria. According to a June 21, 2006 article in the Milford Daily News (Massachusetts), there are 6 confirmed cases of Salmonella (salmonellosis) that may be linked to a turtle in a fifth-grade class. One of the children had to be hospitalized.

Health officials are also looking at a fifth-grade science experiment involving owl pellets. Owl pellets can also carry Salmonella. Parents should tell their children to always wash their hands after a science experiment involving amphibians, reptiles, and owl pellets. Children need to wash their hands with soap for at least 15 seconds.
