E. coli: Here Wee Grow Day Care Sidney, Nebraska
We are investigating a possible E. coli outbreak that has been traced to Here Wee Grow day care center in Sidney, Nebraska. Three toddlers who attend Here Wee Grow day care center in Sidney have been hospitalized for symptoms of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening illness usually caused by E. coli 0157:H7.
"The three children range in age from 9 to 18 months. All were being cared for in the Blues Clues Room at the Here Wee Grow center in Sidney. Two of the children remain hospitalized. The third child has left a hospital and is being cared for at home. (Associated Press)"
The story goes on to say that health officials are testing food and water at the Here Wee Grow day care center in Sidney, Nebraska. Health officials have not yet found a source for what is possibly an E. coli 0157:H7 outbreak.
We will provide updated information when we get it from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
If E. coli 0157:H7 is confirmed, this will be the second E. coli outbreak at a day care center in the United States within the last two months. The other one is linked to Paulette's Day Care in Lafayette, Tennessee. E. coli infections are particularly dangerous for small children, who often develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) as a result of the infection. HUS is the leading cause of kidney failure in children in the United States.
