Listeria Recall: Tuscan Sun Turkey Sandwiches
Jumbo Foods, Inc. of Mukilteo, Washington, has recalled 1360 Tuscan Sun Turkey sandwiches because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Listeria infections can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. About 25% of the people who contract a Listeria infection (listeriosis) die.
The recalled turkey sandwiches are described as follows:
- The Tuscan Sun Turkey sandwiches with a Production Code of 35E was distributed in Washington, Oregon and Northern California through Convenience stores.
- The Tuscan Sun Turkey sandwich is contained in a plastic package, Net weight 5.9 oz, (167g). label. The Production Code of 35E is located adjacent to the UPC code on the front label.
The Listeria recall was the result of a routine sampling program by the Washington State Department of Agriculture, which revealed that the Tuscan Sun Turkey sandwich with a Production Code of 35E contained Listeria monocytogenes. Jumbo Foods has ceased the distribution of the Tuscan Sun Turkey sandwich with a Production Code of 35E as the FDA and Jumbo Foods continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.
