Law Firm Predicts Future E. coli Outbreak Linked to Spinach or Lettuce
Given the lack political will to regulate the lettuce and spinach industries, it is only a matter of time before there will be another outbreak linked to lettuce or spinach. The California Department of Food and Agriculture has approved a voluntary inspection program allowing participants of an industry marketing agreement to put a food safety seal of approval on their products. There are a couple of problems with this. The first is that the industry will continue to police itself. The second problem is that the marketing agreement does not address what seems to be the reason for past outbreaks—growing lettuce and spinach near cattle.
The “safety seal” that the industry can now use will give consumers a false sense of safety. This seems to be a situation where the “solution” to the E. coli problem is almost worse than doing nothing.
