Tainted Chinese Toothpaste

The toothpaste manufactured in China discussed below was not, to our knowledge, sold in the United States.

Two companies from Danyang, China are believed to have exported toothpaste containing diethylene glycol, an industrial solvent and coolant used in some antifreeze.   According to the International Herald Tribune, government investigators on Sunday closed the Danyang Success Household Chemical Company factory and questioned the manager of a nearby toothpaste factory, Goldcredit International Trading.
According to the story in the International Herald Tribune, Shi Lei, a manger from Danyang Success said that diethylene glycol has been used in China for many years and was not believed to be harmful.  The government crackdown came after officials in Panama found diethylene glycol in 6,000 tubes of toothpaste.

There have been many recent incidents of unsafe Chinese food and consumer products reaching foreign markets.  In order to restore any consumer faith among its products, China needs to crack down on the export of unsafe goods.
