E. coli Recall: Ground Beef in Connecticut and New York
E. coli Outbreak Alert: Connecticut health officials are investigating illnesses that may be part of the E. coli outbreak linked to Taco Bell restaurants. We have been contacted regarding the outbreak and continue to monitor the situation. Omaha Beef Company, Inc., a Danbury, Conn., firm, has voluntarily recalled approximately 1,680 pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The ground beef was sold to restaurants in Connecticut and New York. This recall is a reminder of the dangers of under-cooked ground beef, which has been the source of numerous E. coli outbreaks, including a recent outbreak in Longville, Minnesota, that resulted in one death.
Although the risk of E. coli poisoning is well known in the restaurant industry, many employers fail to adequately train food preparers on the risks of E. coli poisoning and how to prevent it. One restaurant chain that focuses on specialty hamburgers uses frozen hamburger patties. On a recent visit, diners were served "well done" hamburgers that had patches of red meat in them. When questioned, employees appeared to not have been told that frozen beef patties cook unevenly or that ground beef poses a risk of E. coli poisoning.
If you have eaten a hamburger or ground beef in a restaurant in Connecticut or Southern New York, you should watch for symptoms of E. coli poisoning, including nausea, cramps, mild fever and bloody diarrhea. If you have bloody diarrhea or otherwise need medical attention, go to the doctor and ask to be tested for E. coli poisoning. If you are diagnosed with E. coli poisoning, contact an E. coli lawyer immediately.
